JKU JP19

Post by Boost1995 » January 15th, 2016, 1:32 pm

Hello all. I have been a huge Jurassic Park fan ever since the 1st movie came out! I am a SCUBA diving instructor and needed a reliable work vehicle for dive trips. I looked around for a YJ Sahara for around 6 months and couldn't find what I was looking for. So, I started looking at the 2 door JK but before purchasing my buddy and I were talking and we decided for dive trips a 4 door JKU would be better. Once I purchased it, the transformation into my version of a tribute to Jurassic Park jeep started! I will be posting all the build pics and specs on here as I continue to mod her.

It's been a few since I've been since I've updated the build thread. Here is an updated pic from PA Jeep fest this year. I'll do a mod update list in the next few posts.

One of the first things I wanted to do was color matched fender flares. After many phone calls about painting the stock ones, I realized that finding a used takeoff set already painted was the best route. So, the searching began and after a few I found a basically brand new hydro blue oem set. They came off a 2015 rubicon that was getting flat fenders. I was able to get all 4 for 200.00! After a couple hour drive she had new flares. I dropped them off at the wrapper and installed them a week or so later.

Another upgrade to JP19 was the oem mopar premium soft top. It is much nicer than the standard one and was a free upgrade! I found a guy that had changed his full doors to half doors. His doors came with the standard material and didn't match the premium top. He was asking around if anyone knew of a fellow Jeeper had a standard top like new. We met up and switched tops!

With the new top and fender flares installed I decided that an oem audio system upgrade was in order. I'll explain more on that later. But, I ended up having the front windows and window strip tinted to complete the look.

Nice pictures! You don't see too many JKs get the Jurassic treatment. I like it, the colour matched fenders definitely help tie things together. And I may be biased but I am diggin' the Poison Spyder bumpers!

Thanks philosoraptor! Your JP Jeep looks great with the Poison spyder treatment! JP19 is coming along slow but steady. I'm looking forward to posting the audio system updates too. I just finished setting the tire pressure and adjusting the headlight aiming. Been needing to do that for ages.

One of the things I've always wanted to do for the JP tribute was put a winch on JP19. So, yesterday I finally made the leap and added a Warn M8000 winch with a Factor55 pro link. I looked at all models and wrestled between the M8000 and the Zeon8. After seeing them both in person I felt the M8000 kept with the conversion I was going for. I'm really happy with how it turned out.

Alright everyone it's time to start the audio system update. JP19 was purchased with a stock 130 head unit and upgraded Apline audio system. It was a pretty nice setup but I wanted something a little nicer for adventure trips and everyday fun. I searched for weeks and explored every option and decided on a 430n navigation unit that was offered as an upgraded option for it. The 430n integrated in the instrument cluster and meshed perfect with the steering wheel controls. I searched and searched and finally found one that was taken out of a 2015 rubicon. It was in perfect condition and was a great deal. This was the start of the system.

After finding the head unit the next step was finding a way to hack the can bus system so that all the features and controls of the head unit were unlocked. The 430n is actually a pretty powerful unit if all the features are availible. I found a company that made a item called a lock pick that unlockes all the useable options of the head unit without having to run to the dealer for a head unit flash Anytime I upgrade. I found the unit on amazon for a great deal and ordered it. The harness of the unit allowed a few different video inputs as well as camera options.

After checking the wiring and connections and of course taming the wiring monster. Lol. I installed it and began trying to figure out how to integrate an Apple TV and stream movies from my iPhone. What I came up with was a hdmi to rca converter. I bought a 12v to dual 5v USB adapter and integrated it into the lock pick harness. I used one of the USB ports to power the hdmi converter and the other to a consol mounted hdmi and USB port. Once this was finished and tested I started on my next project for jp19nand that was hacking an Apple TV v3 to stream movies w/o a power inverter. I replaced the apple tvs power supply with a adjustable dc to dc converter. After that was finished I simply bought an apple hdmi to lightning audio cable for cases where I want to hard stream vs air play or stream through the Apple TV. Here are some pics.
