Kadgarth's Jeep Build

Post by Kadgarth » January 28th, 2010, 5:51 pm

Last week, in return for paying my brother's college tuition for him, he agreed to give me his Jeep. On Saturday I'm going to be able to bring it down to VA from NY. After that I can begin my work :D

Image

1987 Wranger, Inline 6, 4.2 Liter, 110,000ish miles (the odometer works, but that seems a bit light for a 24 year old vehicle so I'm not sure its accurate). There isn't too much rust on the frame and the engine is in decent shape.

Feel free to post any advice or encouragement ^_^

I'll update this post as I improve upon the vehicle.

What I've ordered/put on already:

1-Light Bar
2-Antenna Whip
3-New Ignition switch....it currently turns on without a key in the ignition :P.
4-Fog lights
5-Swapped Hardtop for Soft Top
6-Swapped Full Doors for Half Doors
7-Light bar
8-Added bumper extensions to front

What still needs to be done/bought: (I know theres more than this to make it perfect, but this is where I'm gonna start).

-Change rims/tires
-Swap roll cage for newer round corner model
-Get Sahara Seats (may just go with seat covers from iggee at first...they can match the color scheme decently and I have them in my Charger and love them).
-New Windshield (hairline crack in it)
-Buy a cover for passenger side signal.
-Buy a rear bumper (currently doesn't have one...)
-Lights for light bar.
-Paint Job/decals (duh)
-Winch

Feel free to post any advice or encouragement ^_^

Looks good. I've got an '89 Laredo hardtop with 187k. My to-do list is much the same as yours. What kind of seat are in it? They don't look factory.
What seat covers are you referring to, iggee?

I'm not sure if the seats are factory, but they're certainly old. The leather is pretty dried up especially on the passenger side.

In my Charger I have synthetic leather seat covers made by a company called Iggee (www.iggee.com). Each set is custom fit to the style of seat, so unlike regular seat covers these fit perfectly and look awesome.

They're a little under $200 however, so I think I'm gonna look around a bit and see if I can find a set of used Sahara seats somewhere local to me before I purchase em.

So over the last couple of days I've:

Put the front bumper extensions on.
Changed the fuel filter.
Changed the oil/filter.
Removed a screen on the radiator.
Removed some ugly chrome things on the back.
Painted the rear bumper lightly just to cover the rust.

*Will post picture later of the update*

I tried to put the light bar on but sadly 3 out of the 4 screws in the windshield frame are broken (1 was already sheared before I started) so thats a no-go until I get a decent screw extractor set.

I'm heading to Radio Shack today to get the ball mount for my antenna, will probably throw that on later just for fun (Even though I'll need to take it off before I paint obviously).

I live on Fort Belvoir so I'm using the autoshop they have here on post. Its only like 5 dollars an hour for a bay with a lift so its really pretty awesome. Can't paint here though sadly.

Thats where I got the light bar from.

In other news, its snowing right now so no luck with pictures just yet but.....

I found someone yesterday who traded their soft top (TAN at that!) and half doors for my full doors and hard top. The top fits great though the doors still need a bit of work. I've had to put a couple washers on the hinge so that they can close correctly until I can move the actual brackets.

But yeah, thats an awesome step in my list of things to do. Only other major things are painting and rims.

New pic I took this morning.

I really need to get around to fixing those stripped screws and getting the lightbar on.
