Re: My Jeep 016
I'm finally back, but sadly, nothing has been done yet.
There's been several family issues, switching jobs, and other hassles that have gotten in the way of me actually fixing my Jeep. Life finds a way, right?
Anyways, I did take a closer look of my Jeep and took note of everything I could so I'll know what to repair:
I have a few rusted spots (Not as many as I was expecting, thankfully), and at least three tiny dents in the front, side, and rear.
I also have a series of cracks in my passenger door frame (also, on the right headlight frame.....):
So, hopefully once it cools off, I can finally take this vehicle apart and see what needs to be fixed so I can finally start my Jurassic Park build.
These are pretty much my goals for the year 2020:
1.) Learn how to take vehicle apart and disassemble it.
2.) Discover what needs to be fixed (Clutch or Input Shaft).
3.) After Jeep is operational again, buy a new beige top.
4.) Replace damaged Fender Flares.
5.) Learn how to repair rust/dents in vehicle.
6.) Replace any damaged shells/framing.

Re: My Jeep 016
the cracks around the door lock look like its only the paint. Or is it wrapped with vinyl? There is a lot of color customizing going on here. Its going to be time consuming bringing this back from the previous owners dream.

its amazing how much your jeep has changed in the past 8 years. The camo on the outside looks white and the black is really toasty.

Re: My Jeep 016
A hard painting project is something that won't surprise me, but I'll worry about that after I fix it. From what I can currently tell, the cracks are in the shell. There doesn't seem to be a layer of vinyl.
As for the aging, yeah, my Jeep has really faded sitting in the sun for so long (It was a couple of months before we finally got it in the barn.....). Hopefully once I get to painting it someday, I can make the paint last longer......

Re: My Jeep 016
While I wait for my paycheck to get some jack stands I need, I decided to remove my passenger door and take a closer look at that crack around the lock:
Again, it seems to be in the shell:
Also, since I had to remove the inner panel to access the lock, I went ahead going to town on it with a towel, scour pad, and steel wool, removing any lifted and chipped paint:

Re: My Jeep 016
Yeah.... Speaking of green...... I screwed up:
Even though I was consistently going in a back and forth motion, I got several blotches, ugly lines and it turns out that this panel has several sun spots (which can't be fixed). Later I might try sitting the panel in the sun for a while to see if the paint blotches fade in, or go spray vertically instead of horizontally.......

Re: My Jeep 016
looks like the spray paint was laying down at different thicknesses. the light color under the green might not be covering completely and showing through. im guessing you didn't "seal" the panel first with primer. just put another coat on

Re: My Jeep 016
Thanks for the tips. I was using a "Paint and Primer," so I thought that was good enough. I'll know better when I paint the other cover......ratrace427 wrote:looks like the spray paint was laying down at different thicknesses. the light color under the green might not be covering completely and showing through. im guessing you didn't "seal" the panel first with primer. just put another coat on

Re: My Jeep 016
Here's where I stand now. I had no sunlight today so later I'll take a better picture:
Adding some more layers didn't fix the problems, but I understand that this is a learning process. I'll do better when I go to paint the other panel......
Also, not Jeep related, but I got a special folder to store all of JPMotorPool's guides and references:
Speaking of guides and references, I have a decent idea of how everything should look on the outside, but other than the door panels being dark green, and the console being dark gray, I haven't been able to see more detailed pics of the interior, so I have no idea how I would go about important details like the carpeting when the time comes. Anybody got some pics?
