Re: CplTony's Jeep # 18
Not sure, sorry. A/C is one of those things I let a shop with an evac machine do. I know very little about it from my days working at a body shop that had one of those.

R12 has threaded fittings where 134 has quick disconnects of two different sizes. Most systems will take three 12 oz cans of freon. With the compressor engaged you should be running at around 35-40psi on the low side. If the compressor is not engaged then your low side will read in the 70s. The only way to check the pressures is with the clutch engaged on the ac clutch. If it is blowing hot then the compressor is not engaged or very low. You can also look at the sight glass on the dryer for bubbles if you have a site glass. If he system isnt working then you do not need to have it emptied because it is already empty. you might need to add a ounce of oil or so due to loss from the freon leak. You can buy cans of 134 that have one ounce already in the can. I dont usually do this because you get less freon for a higher dollar amount. You can tell that the compressor needs oil if there is a noise coming from it while it is engaged. If low on oil it will make a fast clatter sound or a hum depending on the design of the compressor. You can look up how many pounds the system holds and 16 oz = 1 pound

With the Jeep running and a/c on full, attach the recharge and let it suck in the freon to the desired pressure level. Right?
Just making sure I did it right to begin with.

Yes that is right but the compressor needs to be turning. If you pull the trigger the gauge will read low as the freon goes into the system but if the compressor isnt running yet then you are only reading the line pressure of the tool as the freon is going in. If the A/C system was working one day and then completely flat the next then you have a repair that needs done. If the A/C hasnt been used in years and you tried to use it then it probably has a very slow leak and you will be ok with just servicing it every year

To better explain there is a low pressure switch in the system used to protect itself. The center section of the compressor pulley is the input shaft of the compressor. You need enough freon to trip the switch and engage the compressor. One the compressor is engaged then you can get your pressure reading

If you're not sure it's full I'd dump another can in.

Found the problem.
I had the fan on full whack but not the a/c...oops.
Fired it all up, it sucked the can right in and yes I will need another one.
I think I'll look into the can with the sealant as I obviously have a leak somewhere.
Another issue resolved by stopping, looking at what I'm doing and going step by step
Thanks all

Well after feeling every darn bump in the road I took the plunge and ordered new leaf springs, bushings and shackles.
Tired of mouse turds bouncing the Jeep around every time I ride over one.
JCWhitney came through and I found 4 of them on my door step yesterday evening.
Bushings and shackles should be here today so this weekend should be a fun time.
With discount code they ran me about $410 overall which I thought was OK.
No lift though, just a direct replacement for the stock 4 leaf ones I have.
Knowing they're new will make the Jeep drive better
