Good Afternoon everyone! I figured with everything going on and the majority of us being stuck at home, it was the perfect time to share my progress so far. I’ve been on the forums for almost a year and have seen many builds and used a lot of references on the site. While I don’t have a Jeep currently, I’m piecing one together to make the final assembly that much easier. With all that said and without further to do, here’s what I have...

The first pieces were to just get going and were the easiest to acquire, the license plates and mirror tag. I choose the number 21 because it was the day the wife and I were married.

After searching far and wide on SearchTempest for a couple months, I found a Ramsey REP6000 in Oklahoma and was able to get it mailed to me at a reasonable price. It arrived with some bent areas and was a little worse for wears, so I decided to take it apart, strip the paint, and do a full restoration on it. Jurassic Edition helped a lot in regards to some of the replacement parts and decals. Currently, I’m sanding away the rust and awaiting replacement internal parts to arrive which should hopefully be on Thursday (new motor and all). Once done, I’ll put it all back together, re-paint and decal it back to original order. The final parts that I need will be a new cable, Clevis hook (which I still need to identify the correct screen used), and new solenoid kit (need to wait for more money lol).

In addition to the winch, on the forum itself I have the custom winch toe eyes, new Sahara side pockets for the Jeep courtesy of Vic, and found an awesome keychain set for the future keys. The wife and I went to Universal for the honeymoon so of course we had to take pictures as Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler lol.

you are really getting that winch clean. will the new motor be the same? I know the new ones have ribs. it surprising that you need a new motor because those things last forever with the solenoid pack clean. Oklahoma? that's my area. did you know that Ramsey winch is in Tulsa? It might still say Tulsa Oklahoma on the label.

I wanted to really get the winch to factory new, or as close to it as possible lol. The new motor should be the same. The solenoid kit that came with the winch was in very rough shape (missing parts, etc.), so that’ll be the next replacement kit I get. I want to give this winch every opportunity to run again. And I actually didn’t know that! The original label was pretty worn away, but I could just make out the “Tulsa” on it.

Looks like you have a good start on parts. I recommend getting your Ramsey parts powder coated and not spray painted. Same with the toweyes. The extra cost is worth the durability.

Powdercoating the winch is not a good idea. The coat is too thick and will chip off at the edges. Also,your parts will be baked between 284-428F which can be a problem for the motor tube (with the glued in magnets). Assemble the winch and paint it,add some clearcoat for durability.

Thank you all for the recommendations. The plan for the paint is using Dupli-colors Rust Barrier Paint since the winch is pure metal at this point. It’ll put on a cover coat to protect the metal from future rust and it’ll provide a layer of protection for wear and tear. Once dried, the primary coat will be a semi-gloss paint also by dupli-color, the engine DE1635. It’ll give it the heat resistance from direct UV and provide a more accurate color. This paint was recommended by Jurassic Edition. The tow eyes are already done, I want to say they were just sprayed a flat black. Currently I’m just waiting for a hot enough paint day to occur. The temperatures continue to fluctuate which kills my progress haha

Well it’s finally nice enough to try and finish painting the winch. Here’s hoping everything goes well and that I won’t have to redo any spots. It’ll cure for the rest of the day and hopefully the decals will go on tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Transformation Sunday! The Ramsey REP6000 is finally painted and back together! This was a month and a half restoration project for a key piece and I couldn’t be more proud of how it came out. Majority of the pieces are original to this winch with the Ramsey Oval being the main original visual standout that I was able to save and reuse. I was able to use the original “spool this way” decal to custom make my own for the authentic decal look. Shout outs to Jurassic Edition for helping provide the load out decal and assistance with parts/paint and to the wife for all of her patience while I worked and had winch pieces all over the house. Maybe I should open up my services to other members, because I really enjoyed this restoration! Now onto the next project!!
