I ran into the same problem when mounting my spare. I just removed the rubber bumpers from the tailgate and the 31" spare fits perfectly. Got news that the engine arrived yesterday. I'm having the Jeep towed out to the shop on Wednesday for the transplant. If all goes according to plan, this should be my last Jeep-less weekend and I can get back to the JP build!

I get some rubbing when the wheel is turned almost to full-lock, but I hear you can just put some washers on the stops to prevent that. My tires rubbed the same way until I used the washers on the steering stops. Now everything clears just fine. You should be okay running 31s as long as your stock ...
